Our History
The Caribbean Cultural and Carnival Organization (CCCO), is a nonprofit organization, comprised of several organized groups in Michigan representing the numerous countries. The CCCO was officially formed in January 1979 with the following objectives:
• To promote and interpret Caribbean culture to the Metropolitan Detroit community through educational means and cultural activities.
• To promote greater cooperation and unity among the Caribbean people living in the Metropolitan Detroit area.
• To highlight the unity of Caribbean community annually in August via Caribbean Festival, termed "CARIVAL: Caribbean International Festival & Parade".
Detroit's one day "Carival" parade was started in 1975. Its goal was to bring together Caribbean people to share their ethnicity and celebrate the natural beauty of their culture with others. In 1993, the celebration was expanded to three days of festivities at Hart Plaza along with the parade.
Caribbean Festivals began in the Caribbean region in the latter part of the 18th century. This extravagant pre-lent celebration of freedom, festival of masqueraders and music is a fusing of African and early European cultures. It is this fusion that birthed the vibrant and colorful spectacle that sweeps the Caribbean region and the world and is now enjoyed yearly in Detroit.
Enjoy the Caribbean in Detroit! It is a family affair.
